Majestic wood fireboxes are large, heavily lined, and tied to a specific chimney, while its gas fireplaces are sealed units dressed with interchangeable interiors and fronts. Chimney Sweep Vancouver handles fireplace repair on both, and this page sets out what wears on each and how we fix it without disturbing the stone or tile around the opening.
Several Majestic wood fireplaces were sold in two versions, radiant and circulating, and the Sovereign and Royalton lines carried both. A radiant model throws heat straight out of the opening off its brick panels. A circulating model also draws room air through passages wrapped around the firebox and returns it warmed through louvers, and those passages collect dust, pet hair, and the odd lost toy over the years.
On a circulating unit, part of every repair is clearing those passages, because a choked passage lets the outer steel run hotter than it should. The current Biltmore is a radiant design with a clean face, so tile or stone runs right up to the opening, and its repairs are almost all inside the firebox. Knowing which version you have tells us whether to bring long brushes and a vacuum for the air passages or just panels and tools.
Six appliance-side parts account for most of the repair work on these fireplaces, and each is ordered against the model number on the rating plate.
Brick-pattern refractory panels - sold in traditional or herringbone patterns with steel mesh moulded inside; a set is matched to the firebox size and pattern so the joints line up.
Tilt-up grate - the heavy grate on the Biltmore tips forward for ash removal, and a bent leg stops it seating, which throws logs against the back panel.
Curtain mesh spark screen - the hanging mesh behind the opening; torn mesh or a jammed rod lets embers reach the hearth.
Glass doors and trim - optional on the wood models, with trim choices on the Royalton; tempered glass and door gaskets are the wear items.
Outside air kit dampers - the Biltmore ships with two, and a seized flap or a duct crushed in the wall starves the fire of combustion air.
Gas interior and front parts - brick panels or reflective black glass liners, front screens, and fan kits on the Meridian and its relatives.
A photo of the plate and of the worn part lets us quote the exact panel set, door, or kit before the visit.
The brick-pattern panels in a Majestic firebox are tougher than plain refractory because of the steel mesh moulded inside, which keeps a cracked panel in one piece. That same mesh hides how far a crack has gone, so we judge a panel by whether any piece moves when pressed and whether steel shows, not by how the surface looks. Brush them with a soft brush only; water and cleaners soak in and spall the surface on the next fire.
Glass doors on a wood unit stay fully open or fully shut while the fire burns, and the tempered glass is cleaned cold with a fireplace glass product. On a gas Meridian, the reflective black glass liner shows every streak and is wiped with a dry, soft cloth, while the ceramic front glass is cleaned cold and refitted on a sound gasket. The front screen goes back on before the next fire, since the gas unit's glass gets hot enough to burn.
Owners often add to these fireplaces years after the builder left. A set of glass doors on a Biltmore or Royalton cuts the warm-air loss up an idle chimney and keeps sparks off the floor. The doors are sized to the model rather than the opening measurement, because the frame mounts to the firebox face. On the gas side, a fan kit can be fitted to a Meridian that shipped without one, and the Wi-Fi module adds app control to an IntelliFire Touch unit that already has the right receiver.
The Biltmore and several other Majestic wood models also have gas knockouts on both sides, put there for a log lighter or a conversion. Adding a log lighter or a vented gas log set through them is gas work and goes through a licensed technician, but the opening, the panel cutout, and the grate fit are part of the fireplace repair visit. Owners in Vancouver usually pair one of these additions with an annual sweep so the screen and panels only come out once.
We start a repair visit with the fireplace cold and the grate out. Panels are pressed and inspected under a light, the screen and doors are worked, outside air flaps are checked, and on a circulating model the air passages are cleared. On a gas unit, the front, liners, and fan come off for inspection. Anything that turns out to involve the gas valve or pilot is quoted separately.
