A stove made of bolted and cemented castings can be taken apart and put back together, which is the whole reason these units last as long as they do. Chimney Sweep Vancouver does that work on the brand's wood stoves and handles the appliance side of its gas stoves and inserts, leaving the pilot, valve, and venting to the separate gas fireplace repair page.
An old cast iron stove with tired seams, cracked burn plates, and a warped baffle is almost always worth rebuilding, because none of those faults touch the castings that give the stove its value. A rebuild means the stove comes apart at its seams, the old cement is raked out, and fresh gasket and furnace cement go into every joint. The burn plates and baffle are renewed and the door and top gaskets replaced before it is bolted back up. Owners regularly bring us Jøtul stoves from the 1970s and 1980s for exactly this, and they go back into daily service. Worn door and ash door handles, sold as a kit for several models, are swapped at the same time.
The exception is a cracked outer casting. A hairline in a side or back plate that shows light through it, or a crack running from the flue collar, is a stop-burning fault. The stove stays cold until we have seen whether that casting is still available. Where it is, the plate is swapped during the rebuild; where it is not, we say so and talk through what a replacement stove would involve, without pushing one.
Six part groups account for most of the stove work on these units, and each is ordered against the model and serial number on the rear plate.
Rope gasket kit - door, glass, and top gaskets sold by diameter and length; the door seal flattens first, the top gasket last.
Burn plates - the back and side plates inside the firebox, replaced when they crack through, which protects the outer castings from the same fate.
Baffle and insulating blanket - a vermiculite board and the blanket above it on current models; a cast plate on older ones.
Secondary air tube assemblies - the tubes and their holders on the back wall, which a long log can knock loose or bend.
Door glass and clips - ceramic glass in a thinner version with a metal channel or a thicker one without, so the right pane depends on the door you have.
Catalytic combustor - the High Flow element on the models that carry one, inspected yearly and replaced when the cells crumble or plug.
Older F 500 Oslo stoves carry a cast iron baffle plate above the fire, and those plates warp when the stove is run too hot, which usually means a fire started with the ash pan door open. The warped plate is replaced, and we show the owner the right way to light the stove so the new one lasts. Current stoves use a lighter vermiculite baffle board with an insulating blanket laid over it, which holds heat in the firebox for the secondary burn but breaks if a log is driven into it.
On many of the newer stoves the baffle and blanket come out through the door once the air tubes are unhooked. On some older ones the top has to come off, which is a longer job and disturbs the top gasket. Knowing which you own tells us whether the visit is twenty minutes or an afternoon. A stove with its baffle whole and its blanket intact keeps burning clean for years, and one without either turns into a smoke maker.
Jøtul gas inserts and stoves were sold with a menu of appliance-side options that can still be added or replaced on an existing unit without opening the gas train. A remote-controlled blower kit with multiple speed levels fits most of the inserts, and a top-firing accent light kit adds illumination that dims through several levels. Panel kits in traditional red brick, brownstone brick, black fluted, or reflective glass change the look of the firebox interior.
Cast iron or steel overlays in matte black, iron, or bronze finishes surround the insert and are the part most often damaged when a hearth is retiled. The GF 300 Allagash carries a reversible brick liner that flips from antique red to brownstone. Whatever is fitted, the Invisimesh safety screen goes back in front of the glass, because the screen is part of the unit's listing and the glass runs hot enough to injure. Owners in Vancouver usually combine one of these additions with a yearly service so the front only comes off once.
A wood stove repair starts with the stove cold and the owner present: we check every seam with a flashlight, lift the baffle, test the door with a paper strip, and photograph anything that needs a part. A gas unit gets its front and overlay removed, the blower run, the lights tested, and the media checked. Each technician holds the licence and insurance the work calls for, and parts are quoted before anything is ordered.
